2. A False Message of Salvation

“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him (you might listen to him).”

(II Corinthians 11:4)

Satan’s strategy is often to (1) attack the Person and Work of CHRIST, (2) attack the Person and Work of the HOLY SPIRIT, then (3) bring in a new basis for your Salvation (“another gospel”).

Here are a few examples:

A. The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

7th-Day Adventists

As part of Christ’s atoning work, He has been conducting an “investigative judgment” in the heavenly sanctuary since 1844. Salvation just started at the cross.

Jehovah's Witnesses

Jesus as an angel is a created being. His death provides an opportunity to attain eternal life through obeying God’s laws. They offer no assurance of eternal life. They say Christ’s blood is only for the 144,000.

Christian Scientists

Jesus, as material manhood, was not Christ. They deny the virgin birth, and miracles. They have a False view of Atonement. “Man, as God’s idea, is already saved with everlasting salvation.” Jesus was not God, and God can never become man or flesh. He did not suffer and could not suffer for sins. He did not die on the cross. He will not literally come back.

Unity School of Christianity

Jesus was a man who had “Christ Consciousness.” “Christ is a state of perfection in every person. Jesus did not die for anyone’s sins.

Black Muslim

Jesus was “only a prophet and not the equal of Moses and Muhammad.”

Freemasonry

“We tell the sincere Christian that Jesus of Nazareth was but a man like us.”

Hare Krishna

They consider Jesus as one of their gurus.

Eastern Mysticism

“I don’t think Christ ever suffered or Christ could suffer” (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi). Christ is considered to be one of a long line of “Masters” who had themselves realized divinity.

B. The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

1. His Person

JW’S

The Holy Spirit is not God, but rather an invisible, active force from God.

UNIFICATION CHURCH

The Holy Spirit is a female spirit who works with Jesus in the spirit world to lead people to Sun Myung Moon.

CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS

The Holy Spirit is defined as the teaching of Christian Science. The Holy Spirit is an impersonal power.

UNITY SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY

The Holy Spirit is a definite thought in the mind of man, not a person.

THE NEW AGE MOVEMENT

The Holy Spirit is a psychic force.

SPIRITUALISM

The Holy Spirit from God is the spirit of some holy person who has once been in the flesh.

2. His Work

ROMAN CATHOLICS - LUTHERANS - CHURCH OF CHRIST - MORMONS

Baptismal Regeneration - Salvation through water baptism

ARMINIANISM - CHARISMATICS

Receive the Holy Spirit after salvation, “second blessing”, but you can lose the experience.

HYPER-CALVINISM

The new birth comes before the hearing of the gospel.

C. Another Gospel

NEW AGE

Salvation through “spiritual enlightenment” through TM. Need to offset bad karma with good karma. Can tap into supernatural power through meditation, self- awareness, TM, and “spirit guides.” Use terms such as “reborn” for this new self-awareness.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

Water Baptism: contacts us with Christ’s blood, gets us into Christ, is for salvation, is for remission of sins, and is to wash away sins.

LODGES

Burial services teach salvation by works, not the blood of Christ. Teach all lodge members saved whether Christians or not.

ARMSTRONGISM

The new birth not now, but at the resurrection. Jesus alone, of all humans, has so far been saved! By the resurrection power of God. Salvation a process, grace and law.

UNITARIANS

Deny salvation by Christ alone. Think of salvation in terms of character, achievement dependent on deeds. Someday everyone will be in a right relationship with God.

7TH-DAY ADVENTISTS

Salvation by faith plus works. Ellen G. White, “As they have become partakers of the righteousness of Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God, their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of eternal life.”

MORMONS

Saved (exalted to godhood) by works, including faith in church leaders, Mormon baptism, tithing, ordination, marriage, and temple rituals. No salvation outside of the Mormon church.

JW’s

Be baptized as a JW. Most followers must earn everlasting life on earth by “door-to-door work.” Salvation in heaven only for the 144,000.

MOONIES

Obedience to and acceptance of the True Parents (Moon and his wife) eliminates sin and results in perfection.

CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS

Humanity is already eternally saved. Sin, evil, sickness, and death are not real, they are only in our imagination.

UNITY School of Christianity

Salvation by recognizing our divinity, and that there is no evil, no devil, no sin, no poverty, and no old age. A person is reincarnated until he learns these truths and becomes “perfect.”

SCIENTOLOGY

No sin or need to repent. Salvation is freedom from reincarnation. One must work with an “auditor” on his “engrams” (hang-ups) to achieve “clear.”

HINDUISM

Release from the cycles of reincarnation. Achieved through yoga and meditation. Can take many lifetimes. Final salvation is absorption or union with Brahman.

ROMAN CATHOLICISM

Salvation only through the Catholic Church. Mary to be worshipped, praying to saints, baptismal regeneration, receive Christ at Communion.

CHARASMATICS

"Full gospel". "If you don't speak in tongues you haven't been baptized by the Holy Spirit and you won't be included in the Rapture."

HYPER-CALVINISM

The gospel plus "Irresistible Grace", or it won't work.

ARMINIANS

The gospel for initial salvation, but then you have to work at it in order to stay saved and ultimately reach heaven.
